Why Purple Spice MK chose Milton Keynes, and what the local community has come to mean to the business.
People sometimes ask why we’re based in Milton Keynes rather than London, where a lot of Nigerian catering businesses set up first. The honest answer is that Milton Keynes is home — and homes are worth investing in.
When we started out, MK didn’t have many places doing proper, authentic Nigerian food. That gap was part frustration, part opportunity. We knew there was a community here — families, students, professionals, couples — who wanted the real thing without driving an hour to get it. So we built it here, for here.
What’s kept us rooted is the community that’s grown around it. Regulars who order every payday. Families who’ve had us cater three different celebrations. People who first tried us at a friend’s birthday and became customers themselves. Milton Keynes has a bigger, closer-knit Nigerian and wider West African community than people from outside it often realise — and being part of that community, not just serving it, matters to us.
As we grow, MK will always be where Purple Spice MK started and where our roots stay planted — even as we cater further afield.
